Our Save the Date cards have officially been released into the wild! Keep an eye on your mailbox!

Sep 29th, 2011 @ 9:48 pm

Tomorrow will make TWO MONTHS that I’ve been married to my lovely wife, and guess what: I still like her. Awesome! Pumped for a lifetime of likin’.

We’ve been quiet, it’s true, but we’re gearing up to start full throttle wedding planning. We’ve secured our florist, caterer, photographer, and DJ. Save the Dates will go out later this month. I’m in the middle of revamping this sassy little site. Other things will happen, too. Off the top of my head, I’m not sure what they are, but oh, how they’ll happen.

Did you see my snazzy finger tattoo? No? Well, check it:

My sweet KK takes up residence on both of my ring fingers. She’s got a matching Ronald McDonald House tattoo, but it’s not on her knuckle because she’s not quite as hardcore as I am.

That’s all I’ve got for now. More later, inevitably. Over and out.

We did it!

We did it!

Today’s the day! Well, the first one, anyway. I can’t wait to be able to legally call KK my wife (AKA Mrs. Starks)!

We’re in today’s Metro NY! Yes, my quote sure does end with a preposition. Don’t judge.

Yesterday, we picked up our marriage license at the Manhattan City Clerk’s office. Since we weren’t actually getting married, we were whisked to the front of the line and had paperwork in hand within twenty minutes. It was faster than getting a driver’s license!

We marry in FIVE DAYS. I am so, so excited.

In other news, I was approached by the Yahoo! Contributor Network to write a piece on how gay marriage in New York affects me. I’m really proud of it. If you’re interested, you can read it here. We’ve also done a couple of other interviews, and may make an appearance in The Village Voice, Metro NY and, after today, Huffington Post.

Update!
We’ve got more details on Big Day #1: Our ceremony is at 610pm on 7/30 at Merchant’s Gate in Central Park (just across from Columbus Circle). We went shopping for our outfits last weekend, and let me tell you, they’re appropriately obnoxious. Katie’s dress is magenta and that’s all I’m sharing until you see the pictures. We’ve made contact with our officiant and will spend the next few days writing our ceremony.
TEN MORE DAYS. What I really love about this whole thing is that it’ll take place in a location I see near daily. So, every day after work—on my way home to my wife—I’ll be able to remember the promises we made to one another on one of the most awesome days of our life together.
PS: The Pop Up Chapel is getting a ton of press. The New York Times did a write-up on it yesterday (click) and I may or may not have already been interviewed by The Village Voice.

Hi! It’s been a long time since we’ve written, but it’s summer in New York and, as usual, it’s as busy as ever.
Things happening right now:
Katie and I have started a joint wedding and engagement photography venture called we are for each other. What could be better than working and traveling together?
Katie is simultaneously finishing up schooling for her waxing license and training for her new job at Strip: Ministry of Waxing.
I have several other projects up my sleeve, none of which are ready for unveiling yet.
This post is about none of these things, however!
As you may well know, on June 24, 2011, the New York state senate passed the Marriage Equality Act, which effectively extends the legal right to marry to ALL couples, regardless of sexual orientation. As the decision was made, we had just landed in Miami for our ten year high school reunion. We were overjoyed. We’d already spoken about what we’d do if the act passed, and in that moment, a possibility turned into a plan: we’d get married in New York ASAP. It only makes sense to take care of all the legal paperwork in your state of residence, right?
Initially, we intended to go to the courthouse, do something quiet and understated. As you well know, we’re planning quite the bash for Peabody, MA next May (for those of you who’re curious, the party is still on), and we didn’t want to lessen its significance or even really call attention to our new plan. Then we heard about the Pop Up Chapel. A group of friends was so excited about this amazing historical event that they decided they’d put together a huge, free wedding for as many couples as they could marry in one day. Figuring plenty of couples would beat us to it, we shot an email into the ether expressing our interest, and what do you know? We got picked!
So, what all of this means is that WE’RE GETTING MARRIED! Not once, but twice! The first big day goes down on July 30th, the first Saturday after the law goes into effect. That’s in 16 days! We’ll be married in Central Park. The Pop Up Chapel team will provide us with an officiant, a photographer, wine, and cupcakes. All we need to do is bring ourselves, our marriage license, and some pals.
There was a time when I thought I would never be able to marry the person I loved. We’re so grateful to everyone who worked so hard to get this law passed, and we are so, so, so excited to be able to say, “I DO!!!” in the city we call home. I can’t wait.

Hello! It felt like it took 900 years, but we’ve finally gotten [some of] our engagement pictures! The one above is one of my very favorite.
Take a look at the rest!

A quick post to let you know that we shot engagement pictures with that genius photographer of ours (Matt Miller) on Coney Island this past weekend.

It was very windy. If you know me, you know my hair is very fickle. Not a good situation. I have no doubt, however, that the end result will be gorgeous. Wind aside, we had an amazing time being silly and hanging out.

We cannot wait to see the pictures. We may even post one or two here. Stay tuned!
